Think Again! From Ian Ritchie Fen Ditton THE letter comparing the £175,000 needed for the Arthur Rank Hospice with the £14 million for the Bridge of Reeds (August 31) pales into insignificance with the £160 million that is required to move the sewage works two miles from its present position into green belt land in a picturesque area close to Fen Ditton. Anglian Water has confirmed that it does not need to move, and will not contribute towards the costs. The land released for 600 houses will not contribute much to these costs and the balance will have to come from the pockets of the taxpayers! Nobody in Fen Ditton or Horningsea wants this blot on our landscape nor the upheaval of construction and the continuing pounding of vehicles that will transit our village roads to deliver loads of slurry and sludge daily for processing. The plans will completely scupper the proposal for the Bridge of Reeds in the same area. Who will want to walk over it to join the network of trails through the Fens, having first had a bird's eye view of a sewage works! The lead sponsors of the Bridge of Reeds have stated that if the move goes ahead, they will withdraw their support for the bridge. The authorities must think again. Rather than bow slavishly to the questionable edicts of central government they should consider what is wanted by, and is best for, their current constituents.
