The real stink From Hilary Bristow-Smith WITH reference to your leader opinion (29 Aug) and article re the proposed removal of the Milton sewage works, which, despite not working at full capacity, is being moved to the green belt between Fen Ditton and Horningsea. Whilst grateful that you have raised the lack of consultation, you have not really identified the real stink. At the meeting in Fen Ditton, we were told the land was needed for new homes and their sewage had to be provided. However, many of us in Horningsea, myself included, have never been connected to mains drainage and have septic tanks with all the attendant problems and expense. How odd then that in 20 years noone has expressed any concern about MY lack of sewage, yet South Cambs District council has such concern for the non-existent wealthy people who will live in Cambridge on the land sold right next to the science park. Certainly ordinary working people could not afford to buy a house in Cambridge. So let's get this clear: South Cambs residents paying community charge with no sewage facilities living in rural Cambridge who cannot afford to live in Cambridge are to have their environment, views, roads and air ruined for the further development of Cambridge for the wealthy only and to clean their sewage, but still not have the amenity themselves. Who exactly is to gain from this? And why has the current plant not been updated with technology to prevent smell drifting to Milton? And why move in preference to that at great cost? WHO GAINS? Something stinks. Your paper needs to find out the truth even if it means going to the very heart of the system. We need answers to these questions. Horningsea Cambridge
